Golden Glow

This is the Greystone Methodist Church in the Greystone Village section of North Providence. It's an old mill community, centered around what used to be the Greystone Mills and later Worcester Textile. The church is tucked into a depression right in front of the main mill building. I really like the tree and steeple composition here, so you may see this location crop up several times over the course of the year.

We had a beautiful blue, cloudless sky today and I wanted to be sure to incorporate that into today's image. The effect you see, though, was the result of post-processing. As I said yesterday, I'm using a demo of Topaz Adjusts and I'm trying to decide if I'll ultimately make the purchase. The effect you see here started with a filter in that plug-in that emphasized the gold tones in the branches and on the steeple. Once in Photoshop, I pulled the effect out even further, increasing the saturation, and playing with the hue just a bit. A cooling filter applied just to the sky corrected the greenish tinge that Topaz had given it. The overall effect is of a shot taken in the "golden hour" with the sun low to the horizon. The actual shot was taken just after noon with the sun almost directly overhead. It's an interesting effect and I love what it did to the branches. Note that I opted not to apply any texture to this image, trying to keep it as sharp as possible.
