Into the Mist

Driving out Route 101 in Connecticut, just over the Rhode Island Line, I spotted these beautiful reflections shrouded in fog on the Bog Meadow Reservoir. I drove the length of Route101 in RI and into CT looking for just this type of scene. It was an extremely foggy morning and I didn't want to waste it. I arrived at this location just at the right time since a few minutes later the entire scene was completely enshrouded. The challenge, though, was in the post processing. I didn't want to lose the soft effect of the fog and mist, so had to take care not to overly sharpen or introduce too much contrast. I think it held just enough detail in the final scene to produce the desired effect.

Post processing was rather subtle. I added a high pass filter with a soft light blend mode to sharpen the edges just a hair. A light blue gradient map was used to enhance the fog's contrast, and I added a warming filter on top of that to soften the blues. A very slight levels adjustment was done to improve the contrast on the fog.
