This warehouse, originally built in 1770 and rebuilt in 1784, was owned by Captain Christopher Sheldon. A prominent businessman in his own right, Sheldon was captain of John Brown's ship, "Dolphin", and of historical note, he was the captain of one of the longboats that participated in the attack on the HMS Gaspee in 1772. What makes him a bit of an interesting character, though, is that he was a privateer in the French and Indian War (which is known in England as the Seven Years War.) A privateer is a legalized pirate. There were many such "privateers" terrorizing French and Spanish ships along the New England coast in the early to mid 1700s. Sheldon was also the captain of the ship "George" and hauled molasses between Providence and Paramaribo, Surinam for Nicholas Brown & Co. Now, this is a polite way of saying that he trafficked in slaves. The "Triangle Trade" of molasses, rum, and slaves, inevitably made its way through Rhode Island and Sheldon was right in the thick of it.
Post processing involved a "photo pop" filter in Topaz Adjust, followed by a slight levels adjustment. No sharpening or other processing was applied.
Thanks, everyone! It was definitely the textures that drew me to the shot as well.
