Late Afternoon Skyline

The setting sun cast a deep glow on the Providence skyline. I spotted this skyline opportunity driving down Veteran's Parkway on the East Providence side of the Seekonk River. To capture the details of the city from that distance, I used a 200mm lens with a 2x teleconverter. The only downside is that the perspective from this side of the river results in the power lines along I-195 to sit in the foreground. (I considered editing them out, but in the end decided they didn't detract enough from the scene to warrant that significant a change.) I opted to go black and white so as to take advantage of the contrast caused by the low sun. It sacrifices the golden glow on the brightly lit portions of the buildings, but I find that it also makes the buildings pop out of the scene.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz b&w FX. I adjusted the color sensitivity sliders and then adjusted adaptive exposure, regions, brightness, contrast, protect highlights, boost black, and boost white. I then removed the noise generated by the contrast and color adjustments using Neat Image. In PSE, I added a levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter.
great picture, looks interesting in black and white :)
