A Taste of Rhode Island

Yacht Club soda is a staple at family picnics, cookouts, pool parties, and just about any other family gathering in the state. They produce a wide variety of flavored soft drinks, although my two favorites have always been grape and orange. The family run business opened in 1915. In 1923, they drilled an Artesian well under the building you see in the background, and for the last 90 years have used this natural mineral water as the basis for all of their beverages. Because of the natural minerals in the water, no salt is added to the product. They are also one of the few companies that still use pure cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup to sweeten the soda. They also only use reusable glass bottles that may be returned for a deposit, reducing the environmental impact of the packaging.

It was the sign in front of the factory store that caught my attention today. I only live about 1/2 mile from here and see this sign a dozen times a week. Today, though, I decided to show the wonderful textures and faded lettering before someone decides to paint or replace it. This sign has character, and symbolizes the long history Yacht Club has as a Rhode Island fixture.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted the color sensitivity sliders, and then adjusted adaptive exposure, boost black, boost white, protect highlights, and contrast. A levels adjustment and a brightness / contrast adjustment were added in PSE. A sepia photo filter tops the layers.
