Clams Anyone? by kannafoot

Clams Anyone?

Being right on the ocean, clams have an interesting place in Rhode Island's diet. We like them in just about any form from raw (i.e. Little Necks on the Half Shell) to clam cakes, to clam chowder, to fried clams, to spaghetti and clam sauce, to just about any other way you can imagine for eating a shellfish. This little sidewalk store, the Clam Shack, serves chowder and clam cakes. It sits on the grounds of the old Crescent Park, an amusement park that went out of business in the '60s. That interesting building behind it is all that remains. That's the Looff Carousel, once a centerpiece of the old amusement park, and now a historic landmark. It's still open during the summer.

The weather today chose not to cooperate. It was a fairly steady rain when I set out for my photo, and with the roads still in a semi-plowed state from this weekend's storm, there really was no point in going downcity for street photography. I settled on this safety shot of the Clam Shack, primarily because it was about the only place I could find that had enough room for me to park while taking the photo! The forecast for the remainder of the week is turning ugly. It's supposed to be in the 50s tomorrow, which will mean flooding since none of the storm drains have been cleared yet. Then they are talking about another 6 inches of snow Wednesday night, with the possibility of another foot Friday night. I'm putting a bounty out on that groundhog that predicting spring was right around the corner.

Post processing started with a standard greyscale conversion in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted the color sensitivity sliders followed by adaptive exposure, regions, protect highlights, boost black, and contrast. I applied a levels adjustment and a sepia photo filter in PSE.

Wonderful scene, and now you've got me craving some real New England clam chowder (do yourself a favor and never, NEVER order it outside of New England. NY likes to think they make NE clam chowder, but no one here does it right) and a good fried clam basket.

Hopefully you guys don't get any more snow - I just checked our forecast and it looks like in typical fashion, it's supposed to miss us entirely!

Great winter shot. I have to admit that I have never had clams of any kind here on the Ohio river...
I really hope that your forecast is wrong on just about all counts.

That looks like a really spectacular carrousel in the background
