Further north on the Blackstone River from yesterday's photo is the historic Manville Dam. Built in 1868, it replaced a colonial era dam, built in 1711 and one of the oldest dams built in Rhode Island. Not surprisingly, this dam was built to support the booming industry in the Manville Mill District. At 18 feet in height, it's one of the highest drops along the river.
I opted for another photo of a dam today to take advantage of perfect lighting. It was an overcast day, threatening rain, so there was no bright sunlight to wash out that wonderful churn in the water below the dam. Nothing ruins a waterfall photo like direct bright sunlight. With the Blackstone River Bike Path following the old Blackstone Canal, there are a surprising number of good photo opportunities of the numerous Industrial Revolution era dams along the historic waterway.
Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment, contrast adjustment, and sepia photo filter were added in PSE.
