Now in her 105th year, Elsie Williams is the oldest living direct descendent of Roger Williams, the founder of the city of Providence. Roger Williams settled on land he purchased from the Narragansett Indians in 1636. Elsie is now the oldest resident of the City of Cranston, Rhode Island. Earlier this year, this centenarian finished writing the final volume of a genealogical series about the first six generations of the Roger Williams' descendents. At a ceremony this afternoon at the Roger Williams National Memorial in Providence, Elsie Williams unveiled this bronze monument on the site of her ancestor's original settlement. The granite monument stands between the spring that serviced the fledgeling community and the land on which Roger Williams' house stood.
