To start the new year right, I went to Plymouth with the Plymouth Digital Photography Meetup Group for a photo walk along the waterfront. The wind was brisk, but the overall air temperature wasn't as bad as we expected. I took well over 500 photos, so it will take some time to sort, process, and upload the ones that will comprise the first new gallery of 2014. The scene before you was taken very early in the photo walk when one of the photographers knelt to take this photo of the waterfowl in Plymouth Harbor. I chose to compose this scene photographing directly into the sun to produce a high contrast silhouette of the photographer. The sun glare dancing off the ripples in the water added a nice magical feeling to the scene.
Post processing started with a neutral greyscale filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.
@cejaanderson Oh yes, I do occasionally get down to that other school that Providence College beats every year in basketball. There are some very interesting and historic photo opps in that area, and it's relatively close to the beaches.
Ha! We tried to work in a trip there on our trip to Boston this past September, but it got too unwieldy for the amount of time we had. Maybe some day . . .
@cejaanderson It's worth a visit, but if time is a limitation then Newport would be a bigger bang for the time buck. September is past beach season too, so Galilee and Point Judith also offer some excellent photo opps without the crush of beach traffic you'd get in the summer.
