Pair of Passing Plows

Pair of Passing Plows
03 January 2014 -- 3/365
North Providence, Rhode Island

As usual, I went for my morning walk before work. Since we got about five inches of snow overnight, and there were still some light flurries when I left my house, I took my camera with me for some early morning snow scenes. It was 3 degrees F (-16 C) when I went out, which made handling the camera with bulky gloves very entertaining for anyone watching. Despite such a small amount of snow accumulation - 5 inches for Rhode Island barely qualifies as snowfall - and despite all of the accumulation occurring overnight, the roads were in surprisingly poor shape. I did see many snow plows traveling Mineral Spring Avenue - one of two main roads in the town - but none of them were actually plowing anything. There was about two inches of loose granular snow on the road which would indicate that working plows hadn't been through in several hours. Normally, with this storm's timing and light accumulation, the main roads would be nearly bare before the morning commute. Not today.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, and boost black. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-dFh5KN3/0/XL/2014%2001%2003_0034%20copy-XL.jpg

Beautiful shot! I have to admit that I am a bit jealous of the snow but not the 3 degrees!
