Protect the Five Hole

Protect the Five Hole

In hockey, the area between a goalie's legs that's only defended by the stick is called the "five hole". One explanation is that it refers to the fifth (of five) locations that a goalie must cover. A goalie that gives up a goal between his legs is said to have not protected the five hole. (Wisconsin fans would also call him a sieve, but that's a story for another day.) Today was a day filled with meetings, so I didn't get out for a photo until well after dinner. I spotted this scene at the top of my street, and found it rather amusing that the kid that setup the net placed it right behind the wall. If he's a goalie, he'd have no trouble protecting the five hole in this setup! In addition to the scene itself, I also really liked the natural lighting coming from the street lamp on the pole to the left. It created some very nice shadows and emphasized the footprints the kid made earlier in the day playing in the fresh snow. (We got about 5 inches overnight.)

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's a high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-6bHW2GW/0/XL/2014%2001%2022_0007%20copy-XL.jpg
Love the lighting and contrasts in this shot…well composed and the POV keeps the viewer bouncing back to the goal…great shot.

@justaspark @tabithasyear Hey, I'll gladly send you ALL my snow if you're willing to take the -13 C temperatures we've been having, too! After my walk this morning, I think my nose will thaw sometime after noon. LOL
