When I set out from work at lunch for today's photo, I planned to take advantage of a nice warm spell and go downcity for some street photography. Unfortunately, access to where I normally park was blocked by some road crews checking out a pothole the size of a small village. (I can attest to the size of the pothole since they didn't fix it and I managed to hit the blasted thing on my way home.) Since I couldn't get to my parking area I needed to scramble for a new photo idea with the clock ticking before my next meeting. I decided to check out the area around Hunts Mills knowing if nothing else I could shoot either the dam or the fish ladder. What you see before you is the latter. The fish ladder was completed last year, but it's never been used. What the engineers neglected to consider was the size of the rapids just below the ladder. The river herring can't get through the raging water that hits those rapids during their spawning season, which means they are stymied about 50 feet below this fish ladder. It's all that stands between them and their spawning ground. Hopefully they'll fix that problem before this year's herring run.

Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Here's the high res version in Smugmug: http://kannafoot.smugmug.com/Photo-Challenges/PAD2014/i-HXzXp6d/0/XL/2014%2002%2020_0021%20copy-XL.jpg
Lovely tones and interesting, but worrying narrative.
