Some of you will know that I have had a series in the local paper called "Then and Now". It helps with my hobby of photography and local history which I can combine to produce these comparisons.
The first thing to do is to try and work out exactly where the original photographer stood, taking into consideration the difference in the old camera and the current modern versions. It's then a case of cropping each picture to match, that's the tricky bit.
This is a picture of the Boulevard in Rodborough, very near to where my late Sister Mo lived. You have these lovely Cotswold stone terrace cottages on a raised platform and the trees. If you look closely at the old picture you can see where some steps come up from the road, you should just make out the same steps in the modern picture. I almost got an old and new car in the same spot.
Not a lot of changes but the trees have grown and no longer have a protective fencing around their trunk , creepers are growing and flowing over the front wall softening it's appearance , no longer the chain-linked fence along the wall , and the continuous white line replaced with a broken white line ! It I enjoy "spot the difference - hope I have spotted them all !
Wonderful Heather, so interesting! The trees all full flowing & add so much to the modern photo….a real good reason to plant more trees can be seen here!
The old photo looks a bit uptight for want of a better word…quite suited to the times of course!
I'm surprised the trees are still healthy after nearly 100 years! Of course they may have been replanted in the following years. The colour photos are so much nicer!
