It has been a year or so since I have used artistic filters to edit an image for a hand painted effect. I decided to put the three layers up so you can see the actual files I used.
I often find 'artistic' filters give a flat look to an image I am working on, so I like to use masks to control the strength of the filter effect in different areas of the image. This is a really quick way to do this - and the best part is as I have no painting talent at all, if I make a mistake with the white paint on the black mask layer, I can just paint over it with black paint - the ultimate undo!!! :)
Note I painted black paint at the top of this sketch as I did not want the top rows of cars too dominant. I also added a Hue/Saturation/lightness layer after finish 'painiting' to tweak the final colours, but all up it only took about 15 minutes to do. It took waaaay longer the make the tutorial, but it was something new for me, so I did not mind.
The trick is using the larger brush first at low opacity for the large areas, then reduce size & up the opacity for the finer details. I have included 3 of the brushes I use so you can see the same brush at different opacity & density can look quite different.
If you have ever used layers, I hope you can make sense of the instructions - let me know if you don't and I will try & help.
Hope you are enjoying the Easter holidays as much as I am!
So cool and creative! Thank you for sharing your creative process too, your editing skills are amazing and wish I had so much more free time on my hands to learn!
