I am not a particular fan of 'modern art' so it has been interesting for me to learn that Cezanne was the 'bridge' between Impressionism and Cubism. Much of his work features straight lines, odd perspectives, and contrasting form.
I searched through a lot of my files and finally found this shot of the steps to the Basilica St. Michel in Menton in France.
For this style I deliberately have not corrected the lens distortion in the shot so many of the lines look deliberately a little wonky. I simplified the image using a Topaz filter, then used a whole lot of trial & error learning how to use DAP Painter ( http://www.mediachance.com/dap/).
Fascinating processing... it reveals what is possible. As a "newbie," my horizons are kind of short, so this is a wonderful example of how to do more than "the usual." The results are really effective... it looks just like a Cezanne to me. I do like your choice to leave the "wonky" lines alone, too.
@jyokota :) thankyou! Menton is an amazing village - worth putting on anyones travel bucket list!
@katrin@aikiuser@rosiekerr@grammyn@thistle cheers! :-D Funnily enough when I first downloaded this to my computer I was quite disappointed because I had not captured what (I thought) my eye had seen. I rated my composition as a failure, and only because I was looking for a suitable shot for this challenge, did I give it a second glance. What a reminder to not be so hasty in dismissing my shots as failures. Because I shot in RAW, I guess I used a LR download preset that did not complement the image, so if I were to tweak the colours & clarity of the original image, it probably would have been fine.
Isn't it wonderful how processing can save our opinion of a shot? Here you thought it was a failure and in the end its "mistakes" were what you needed to imitate Cezanne. He is an interesting painter for his time period. We called him a "Post Impressionist" back in the days I studied art history. But I do remember my professor once saying he felt Cezanne was "behind" as an Impressionist in the technical parameters of Impressionism and ahead of his time as an Impressionist because he would not stay within the limitations of the Impressionist view of light. So much easier to say he was a bridge between Impressionism and Cubism! fav
