I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1867
I heard the bells on Christmas Day,
Their old familiar carols play.
And wild and sweet the words repeat,
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
I thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom,
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
And in despair I bowed my head,
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,
With peace on earth, good will to men."
Till, ringing singing, on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime,
Of peace on earth, good will to men!
Well, I know they're not exactly the right bells for the poem, but that's what jumped into my mind as I uploaded the picture. It's hard to believe this poem is over 100 years old. The words sound like it was written this year!
i could almost hear the tintinnabulation of these little bells. well, in fact, i have the same bells hanging down my front door. just on the weekend i used the word "tintinnabulation" when i was talking to my little grandson darren. he kind of liked that word. but now the poem "the bells" by edgar allan poe comes to mind and i shall go and google it so i can refresh the old brain. but i love mr. longfellow, too! nice perspective and processing, ann. and thanks for the poem. bells! bells! bells! :-)
@kerristephens Thank you Kerri! @summerfield Thank you Summerfield- my my such big words! Impressive! @digitalrn Thank you Rick! @karenann Thank you Karenann! @httpgeffed Thanks Colleen- the other way I had considered was to take them off and curl them up in a coil. I think they'd look pretty interesting that way. @bkbinthecity Thanks bkb!
Thanks to all- since the original was slightly blurry (because of me, not the camera) I decided to process it in the posterize effect. It really made the difference.
@yomamabinrotten Thanks Wyoming! @alia_801 Thanks Alia! @stinkypete Thanks Pete- and a Merry Christmas to you and yours too! @geertje Thank you Geertje! @cortens Thank you Julie- and thank you Mr. Longfellow. We all need that reminder from time to time!
Puts me in the Christmas mood....we don't hear or see sleighbells in our neck of the woods. Alas, I've never been on a sleighride. Awesome shot and carol to go with it!
@hinkipunk94 Thank you Sophie! @adobewaters Thanks Adobe- well, they're jingle bells not church bells, but as you can see that didn't stop me from posting the poem!
@kloud Thank you Bonnie- the original was ever so slightly out of focus and I was just too lazy to go and retake it- so I put it through the posterize effect. Confessions of a lazy photographer.
