Tonight is the final night of the Hanukkah celebration. The Servant Candle will be lit one last time and all the other candles will draw their light from its wick. Families will gather around the menorah, share small gifts, sing songs and eat the traditional foods. After all the candles have burned down, the menorah will be put in a special place for safe-keeping until next year's celebration. The Hanukkah lights that have burned brightly this past week will be gone, but not forgotten. They have symbolized a great event in Israel's history; one of hope and triumph in the midst of oppression and religious persecutiion. Curiously, Hanukkah is not mentioned in the Old Testament Scriptures, but it is mentioned in the New Testament (The Gospel of John, chapter 10, verses 22-30). If you are a curious soul, you might want to look that up! In a few days, many of us will make resolutions for the coming year. Perhaps the Feast of Dedication with its Servant Candle and message of perserverance, purity and hope will inspire us to set goals for 2012 beyond ourselves and for the benefit of others.
Beautifully taken and wonderful comment, Ann. Love the processing on this and the lighting. That is so interesting that Hanukkkah is not mentioned in the Old Tesament . . I didn't know that. Thanks for telling us about it.
@bruni Thank you Bruni- I am glad that you enjoyed the series. I enjoyed doing it. @mrssmith Thank you Carla for your kind words and faithful comments! @michaelelliott Thanks Michael! I appreciate your comments so much! @karenann Thank you Karenann. I think I still miss teaching! @sanera Thanks Samantha! @kerristephens Thank you Kerri! @digitalrn Thank you Rick. It seemed fitting to do a shot of the whole menorah. I was really pleased with the result.
This has been fascinating to see what you posted each day. I too, am fascinated by the similarities in he faith and in the winter holidays of these two branches of the three who all consider themselves "children of Abraham"
great lighting and shadows to finish off the challenge. well done, ann. the information you imparted and commentaries on this tradition have been truly useful in understanding this event/celebration and is much appreciated. great job. great photo.
@httpgeffed Thank you Colleen! @karenann Thank you Karenann! I taught Bible, Worldview and Apologetics in a small private Christian School for 2 years. I taught grades 6 through 12 and really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, the school did not have the money to renew my contratct in 2010 and I have been out of work for 2 years. It's hard to find something with such a specialized degree and many schools are now combining classes and I do not have an Education degree so I'm at a disadvantage there. I keep looking though and who knows... only God... as to what might turn up. I have only mentioned it once or twice, so you probably didn't miss it- don't feel bad!
@bkbinthecity Thanks bkb! @pandorasecho Thanks Dixie! It's a fascinating study to be sure- simple yet complicated all at the same time! @alia_801 Thanks Alia! It was a good subject for me. Others might be even more challenging. I might try it again with something completely different. @summerfield Thanks Summerfield! I'm glad that you enjoyed this series. It's a beautiful holiday!
What an interesting and wonderful subject to teach! You must be well-versed on alot of biblical history then. I got my degree in English . . but never went on to get the Education degree. I knew that I didn't want to teach. Good luck in the future with this, Ann. I truly hope that you find what you want . . and yes, God will lead you there.
I really like how these candles invoke a warm, welcoming glow. Thanks for sharing such an interesting history - I enjoyed reading this very much. So much to learn....
@karenann Thanks Karenann- you're right, He will. I just have to be patient in the meantime. (o: @prttblues Thanks Bev! I enjoyed doing this challenge and will probably do another one in my second year. Different subject and perhaps a different style too. @kloud Thanks Bonnie! I'm glad you enjoyed reading them and looking at the pictures. My favorite of course is the one featuring my granddaughter, but this is my second favorite and I'd been waiting all week to take it. I was surprised though at how much light all the candles threw off! In order to get this, I stayed up WAY past my bedtime so that the only thing lit in the house was the candles! Then I slowed down the shutter speed and lowered the aperature so that there'd be no glow. Maybe in year two I will become more intricate in my set-ups like you! You truly are an inspiration to me! @sarasdadandmom Thank you Terry! @jeancarl Thanks Jean Carl!
@crickle1969 Thank you Crickle. I think the subject is critical. It has to be something you'd be interested enough in to photograph it for 7 days straight. But it also needs to be something that be versatile enough to photograph in seven ways. For me the biggest thing was to choose a topic or subject that had those two qualities so I wouldn't get bored with it!
