Moon(stone)

I had to take a shot of the moon for December's challenge and I posted a shot of the moon last month, so when I saw the word "moon" on this month's challenge list, my first thought was, "Been there, done that!" But this morning, I thought better of it, and decided it would be fun to do a variation on the day's theme. Moonbeam (not in the morning!). Moonshot (that book is packed in the attic somewhere). Moonwalk (I could never do it justice and I hate selfies anyway). Moonstone!

Anchor Hocking manufactured the distinctive Moonstone pattern on glass dishes from 1941-1946. This pattern is easily identified by its clear hobnails, and the milky, or opalescent, edge. Anchor Hocking was a newly consolidated company at the time and had just begun manufacturing glassware for the home in 1937. The opacity, or milkiness, comes from adding ash or tin oxide during the firing process.

An interesting little effect occurred while I was photographing this beautiful dish against some black velvet. I actually did get a shot of not one, but several moons. Do you see them?
Yes, interesting shot. I do see the moons, indeed!

Interesting! And you're still in a "round" frame of mind ... :) I like the interpretation of the challenge.

I spent ages wondering what the shot was... then read your spiel. Doh! I thought it was a collage of moon shots somehow but that didn't quite seem right either! Never heard of the glassware but I love it already!
March 24th, 2012
PS Just looked it up on Ebay for the whole view - such wonderful pieces! I'll keep an eye out for some over here.... :)

Crescent moons indeed. You are really pumping up your creativity! I always loved hobnail glassware, but never in a million years would I have come up with this idea....cool!!
March 24th, 2012
i totally forgot about that type of glass - this is OUTSTANDING ANN - FAV

@beachradish That I am, but I can honestly say I've never seen anything but a round moon. Now that would be an interesting twist in a children's story- a square moon, a triangular moon, or any other intriguing shape.
@filsie65 Yes, it's very pretty. I have a friend who has a complete set of it. This plate had a crack in it and she was going to throw it out. But I asked if I could take it just to put in my window. So it's not worth anything, but it sure came in handy for this shot!
@alia_801 I was lucky on this one. I was just photographing the glass and when I uploaded the pictures I discovered the moons on this one. So I was able to get my moon shot in after all!
@sangwann Thank you Dione!
@cimes1 Thanks Carole! Well, I didn't set out to capture the crescent moon in the knobs. I was just photographing the plate and discovered them when I uploaded the shot into the computer. This was definitely a "lucky shot"!
@adobewaters Thank you sooooo much Adobe!!!!!
