Argyle by olivetreeann

Argyle

The argyle pattern is made up of solid colored diamonds or lozenges and diagonal lines. Most argyle layouts consist of overlapping motifs which gives the design a 3-D effect. The argyle pattern is derived from the tartan of Clan Campbell, of Argyll in western Scotland and is used for kilts and plaids. It is often seen on the patterned socks which have been worn by Scottish Highlanders since at least the 17th century. Argyle knitwear became fashionable in Britain, and then the USA after WW1. Thanks to golfers Payne Stewart and Stuart Stockton, argyle has reached a moderate degree of popularity in the USA. Even some international sports teams like the 2010 Men's Norwegian Curling Team have argyle in their uniform.

I thought I might have to resort to a bonus word today until I remembered that Jeff had one pair of Argyle socks!
Marvellous detail!

@karenann Thanks Karenann. I don't think I ever have either. These were a freebie many years ago from a friend who worked for a sports clothes line- in the golfing division!

@ellimae Thanks Ellen. When I went to post this I thought "What can I say about this shot? It's just a close up of the argyle pattern!" Got me wondering so I decided to learn more. And now you know the rest of the story!
@summerfield Thanks Vikki! You know me- the frame has to match the picture!

Beautiful capture and colours. Great narrative which reaches a soft spot in my heart for the Scottish clans.

Very stylish

Clever selection and I enjoyed reading your narrative. I used to love Payne Stewart and his golfing attire. He lived in the Orlando area & we used to see him at the Bay Hill golf tournaments every year. I got his autograph & photo & had it tacked on my bulletin board at work many yrs ago. It was so sad when he died. Anyway, really nice color and patterns in your photo.

Interesting history and nice focus on the socks :)

Goodness, I missed this one...now where did I set my camera, Great socks!
April 23rd, 2012
@prttblues Thanks Bev! I was trying to remember if I had a pair in high school (my crazy sock days- oh yes, I was a fashion rebel!) but I don't think I did. My taste ran to striped ones I think.
@ulpiphotos Thanks Ulpi! It seemed too boring to just say, "This is the close-up of a pair of argyle socks." And I am a curious person by nature- always looking things up!
@sangwann Thanks Dione- ah, yes I have a soft spot for them too since my father's father's side is from Hamilton Scotland (my maiden name). (o:
@peterdegraaff Thanks Peter! I do like the pattern, but have never worn it!
@cimes1 Thanks Carole! My dad was an avid golfer when I was a little girl. He took me to a tournament once where we saw Jack Nicklaus and Chi Chi Rodriquez among others. Those were the two who stood out in my mind- especially Chi Chi! Cool knickers- and argyle socks!!
@alia_801 Thanks Alia! I must say since it was the only argyle I had, the shot dictated a close-up!
@httpgeffed lol Colleen! Thank you, but don't feel bad! It's easy to miss a shot every now and then. I have a feeling I am going to miss hundreds when we visit the grandkids in a few weeks!

Beautiful...the colorful pattern of the argyl socks were very popular years ago..I don't see them nowadays or maybe I'm not looking for them. don't have to buy socks too often.
April 23rd, 2012
Lovely colours and toastie too, perfect.
April 23rd, 2012
Like the stitching! And congrats on your mugs on the PP!
April 23rd, 2012
@bruni Thanks Bruni! Actually I've seen some of the teens at church wearing argyle vests! I guess it's pop culture stuff that's fun for them. But not too many wear it, but once in a while!
@melorac Thanks Carole! lol They were some freebies given to my husband, but he's never worn them!
@twinsplusone Thanks Sharon! Yes, for a brief while the mugs and the marble were on the PP together. That was very exciting!
