Today's challenge is to try a new technique or setting on your camera. I had seen a shot a while back where the photographer placed their sunglasses over the lens which gave the photo the appearance of being shot during the golden hour. Our day at Cape May gave me the perfect opportunity to give that effect a try. I don't think this looks like the golden hour, but I do love the retro film feel the shot took on when I placed my glasses in front of my camera. This shot is completely sooc.
@kimgrowsup Thanks Kim! @mrssmith Thanks Carla! Oh, there were people there, I just waited until they ducked down behind the dunes. @annaluceya Thanks Anna! @netkonnexion Thanks Netkonnexion! Yes, I was really pleased with the way this one turned out!
Good idea and it worked very well. I love the tones and the whole scene looks so inviting. Cape May, NJ I presume? Never been their but I understand there is a bird observatory featuring many rare birds. Would love to see that.
@bkbinthecity Thanks Brian! @beachradish Thanks Beachradish! @annaruth Thanks Anna! I can't remember who did it but I thought it would be fun to try. After a few "practice" shots around here, I knew I wasn't in the right environment for it (too many trees). But at the beach- I knew it would be the right spot! @cimes1 Thanks Carole! You would love Cape May- yes NJ. The Victorian bed and breakfasts are absolutely gorgeous! And there is even one called Angel By the Sea (or Angel of the Sea) especially for you. We've never been able to afford staying at one- but my friend and I once took a tour of a few and they were just amazing! @sangwann Thanks Dione! Yes- I think it would work really well for you.
I seem to remember my dad doing this with polarising sunglasses to get a picture of a fish: sound principle, not sure whether it worked though. The tint makes this photo look like it was shot on out of date film, which is rather cool. A not-so-neutral density filter.
@automaticslim Thanks Automatic- yes it made me think of the old photos I have from the 60's that have faded with age. It was a fun experiment but certainly wouldn't work for every shot.
@espyetta Thanks MaryBeth! My result was not really like the one I saw, but I think it has to do with the kind of sunglasses you use. It made me wonder what other glasses might do- especially the graded ones. Oh no- more random purchases in my future!
What a nice picture! I love that it looks like you are seeing it from the viewers POV as if I was wearing a pair of rose colored glasses. Great job Ann!
@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole- sure did!! @prttblues Thanks Bev! I'm sure it looked pretty weird when I was holding out the suglasses, squinting and while holding the camera up to the glasses and taking the picture with the other hand!
retro look, indeed! there's a great idea. i might just copy this technique next week. would you believe it, eight more days to go and it's bye-bye june. did you notice that the days are getting shorter now? :-)
@summerfield Thanks Vikki- no go right ahead and use it- I learned it from someone else here myself! I wish I could remember who! But their's came out with a lovely golden hour glow. I think it must have been the tint of her sunglasses. Anyway, I still like the way mine turned out- like something out of the 60's.
Certainly does have a retro feel to it! You have given me some inspiration to go out and try something. I'm feeling rather low at present and need to try to get my motivation back!
@salza Thanks Sally! I know that can happen- one time I was so disgusted with everything I shot. And the pictures I'd taken that day were awful, so I went on the former Picnik site and put one of those horrible shots through the "hypnotic effect" and called it "No Good Shots Today". The silly thing made the PP! I think people just liked the title. The picture really was terrible! Don't feel too pressured- relax and have fun with your shots. The inspiration will come.
@mrssmith Thanks Carla! Oh, there were people there, I just waited until they ducked down behind the dunes.

I really liked the way this came out too.
