My mother did NOT like the color purple. I'm not really sure why! But she didn't; so it was never in my wardrobe as a child. Or on anything I owned. And as I grew older, I somewhat adopted a similar feeling for the color. It didn't matter if it was lilac, lavender, mulberry, plum or any other shade. If it was purple, I never wore it and I didn't really care for it. When my mother-in-law sent me purple gloves for Christmas one year, I immediately made them my wood stacking gloves! But at some point, somewhere along the line, somebody must have made me think twice about the color purple, (probably my friend Debbie who LOVES!!! every color in the rainbow and will wear all of them!) and now I don't mind it anymore. In fact, I have even bought an article or two of clothing in this rich and elegant hue. Sadly, this change of heart is not truly reflected in my home! I have one, take note- only one!, piece of purple glass to finish out my rainbow. It's less than 2 inches in width and 1 inch tall and only holds one little itty-bitty tea light! But I was able to get a picture of it for my rainbow, so I'm a happy girl!
Congratulations on creating a beautiful rainbow Ann. It is funny how different people are. I am the opposite to you and love the colour purple and do buy purple clothes, puple shoes, well purple anything!
I don't think my mom hated purple but we just did not wear purple back then I don't think....I have a pic of my second grade class that I show my students and they notice really fast most kids are in browns and greens and some washed put reds. That is it. I love your purple photo!need to go see your calendar view!
Interesting what we can take away from the hands of our mothers! I'm glad you found even this tiny purple to complete your rainbow week. . .and I LOVE the thumbnail view. You have encouraged me to print out the July challenge and I hope I'll find the time someday to do something like this!
@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole! I do buy purple now- in fact I bought a purple sweater last Spring as well as some tops that had more purple than not in them too. So, I do have purple, just not much purple glass! I particularly like the deeper purples like plum and eggplant. @maggiemae Thanks Maggie! It's a tiny little thing, but it did photograph well. @la_photographic Thanks Laura! @httpgeffed Thanks Colleen! @espyetta Thanks MaryBeth! Yes, I'm more likely to consider it now when I'm shopping (which isn't too often!). But I don't react to it anymore like I did in the past- lol. I had fun doing this rainbow in glass. @wenbow Thanks Wendy! I was really thinking about how it would look next to the blue shot of yesterday- so that determined how much would show up in the picture. @summerfield Thanks Vikki! This was a fun week- although I must confess I just wanted to shoot and post the whole thing on Monday!! I really had to stay tough on myself to shoot each one on its appropriate day! @lyno Thanks Lyn! I know my mother did not mean to limit our color appreciation! But it is funny that not one of us (I have 2 sisters after me) really thought twice about it. My sisters had daughters though, so purple entered their lives much quicker than it did mine since I had sons! Join the challenge now- this week it's numbers! It's never too late to start. @kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
Just gorgeous Ann! The whole Thumbnail Rainbow Looks Terrific!! I am so glad you found the purple to complete your beautiful pattern of glass! Great Job .,..Now onto the Numbers!! :)
It's funnywhat we carry with us from childhood..at the days I was a youngster those colors were for old ladies.. there is a saying in German when I translate it it says something like this..purple being called lila..so here it goes: Lila is the last scream.. sound derogatory to me. mind you violet is actually pretty.. like your glas plate in that color..
@ellimae Thank you Ellen- this was a fun week! I've been so focused on the colors I haven't thought ahead to how I will do the numbers!! I guess I'll be sleeping on it! @bruni Thanks Bruni! That's interesting because it reminds me that sometimes we will say a certain action that someone does is their last hurrah (which is like a scream) and purple is a color often associated with mourning. This is actually another votive and not a plate. I just took a super close-up of it which gives you the impression that it's flat- but in reality it is under 2 inches wide and about an inch high.
I love this, the colour is so vibrant! Purple is my favourite colour, I even have a purple dog leash and collar! You thumbnail rainbow looks lovely :-)
Too funny, but my mother didn't either. Me on the other hand have always loved all shades of purple. Lovely shot. I have a couple pieces of purple glassware---one is looking at me right now on my desk ;-) Always enjoy your stories, Ann.
Purple and pink are absolutely the most popular colors for little girls in our library. I actually have a display of books with these colors on the cover or in the title. Isn't that funny? Love this shade in your image and I'll bet all my little girls would too!
Thanks to everyone! There's been such a great response to my rainbow and that makes me quite happy! I've been very intentional with these shots- choosing pieces that I thought would best be filled with light and really brighten the thumbnail. It was also interesting to think about the entire week being one composition as well as each day. So I truly appreciate all the enthusiastic compliments! Wishing you all a great start to the new week! It's numbers this week...what to do, what to do...
I still don't like purple but my son practically has it as his signature color. I have noticed that it seems to evoke more emotional response than most colors
I think that's a lovely colour, and the thumbnail rainbow looks splendid. Purple used to be widely associated with mourning, which might explain your mother's dislike of it ... ?
@pandorasecho Thanks Dixie! There are still some purples I'm not crazy about, but with a granddaughter who loves it, I keep it under wraps! How interesting that your son likes it so much! @automaticslim Thanks Andy- I don't know. I never got to ask her! It's possible, but I really think it was just a matter of preference. But I do know people who do dislike it for that reason.
I always like purple as a youngster ... and lilacs are my all-time favorite flower. Now I tend to gravitate to earth tones .. almost exclusivity. Still I love touches of purple. And this is truly a beautiful capture ...love the little textures in the glass. I love, love, love your glass rainbow.
@karenann Thank you Karenann! I'm afraid the numbers aren't going to be as spectacular- oh well! I'm always surprised by what the close-ups reveal. Who would have thought a tiny little votive could have so many color changes!
I stopped buying purple about 20 years ago when my husband noted how many purple items I had in my wardrobe. Then added that he really disliked purple. LOL haven't worn it since. But there are some very lovely hues of purple. Nice rainbow series.
I'm not a purple fan myself (my ex MIL bought me everything purple and I grew to hate it) ... BUT this is a lovely shot! You did a great job with this one, Ann!
@olivetreeann I have no clue. I mentioned once that I liked purple and she thought it was my favorite color. It didn't dawn on her that I wore mostly black all the time. LOL
I love purple!!! I'm glad it's in your life now. I can't believe you grew up without purple. I guess, that's why God puts all colors in the sunset for those of us who lack a color or two in our life. It was meant to be, cause God made all the wonderful colors for us to enjoy. Beautiful photo :-)
@vposey thanks Vickie! Well, we weren't totally without purple- we had grape jelly and grape juice; popsicles, crayons, toys and other purply things; we just didn't wear it very often! @netkonnexion thanks Netkonnexion!
I am really diggin' the glassware theme you used for the week... I love the composition of the shots individually, and together they make a beautifully funky rainbow :)
@maggiemae Thanks Maggie! It's a tiny little thing, but it did photograph well.
@la_photographic Thanks Laura!
