His name means "laughter". If you say it in Hebrew (its language of origin), it's "Yit-szock" and it sounds like a chuckle gurgling its way up your throat. It comes from the Bible story of Abraham and Sarah, who were WAY beyond child bearing years when God promised them a son. As an angel of God told Abraham that he would father a child through Sarah, she was eavesdropping at the tent door. But this news sounded impossible and comical to Sarah, so she laughed in disbelief! Confronted by the angel, Sarah denied her humorous response, but in less than a year, the prophecy came true, and Isaac was named to reflect both Sarah's amusement over the promise and her joy over Isaac's arrival.
Our own Isaac has an amusing story surrounding his name as well. When Betsy and Christopher learned they were to have a son, the quest for the "perfect" name began. Without mentioning their first two choices, I will just say the response to either of them from family members who asked, "Have you picked out a name yet?" was completely underwhelming. After dozens of responses like this, Betsy and Christopher went back to the drawing board and came up with Isaac. A massive sigh of relief spread throughout our collective families.
From the moment he entered our lives, Isaac has lived up to his name. He is either laughing at the world around him because it delights him to no end, or causing us to laugh at his non-stop activity, amusing antics, crazy hair, and facial expressions. When I saw the word laughter on our November list, I immediately knew what I'd be posting today! Here he is flashing "Mimi" (his version of Grammy) one of his endearing smiles.
@pandorasecho Thanks Dixie! Both of Jeff's grandmothers went by Nan- so our boys had Nan Hannig and Nan Heyer. Family names can really be fun with some of the stories attached to them.
A beautiful shot!! He is adorable! Love his hair. Nothing like having a little one in your family that brings you lots of laughter and joy. My youngest is a lot like this little guy :-)
