Reflecting on Shadows by olivetreeann

Reflecting on Shadows

My week of shadows has come to a close. I was disappointed that my camera would not pick up the shadows cast by the moon last night, but it doesn't have a bulb setting where I can keep the shutter open long enough. But this afternoon I noticed the shadows cast across the far wall in the room where our computer makes its home and realized it created an interesting image.

I am not sure why shadows are so intriguing, but they are. Maybe it is the way they interact with light, or that without light they wouldn't really exist. It could be that shadows fascinate us by their ambivalence. They can hide evil or protect one from harm. They can entertain or frighten. We've all had a shadow give us a scare, but we've also scrunched up our fist, stuck out two fingers and made a playful shadow bunny hop across the wall. Shadows, when seen through the lens of a camera can spark creativity or ruin a shot; it all depends on the photographer's goal. But when you are in search of them to be your next subject, you begin to see beauty in each one- shades of gray, interesting shapes, the interplay with light or texture, and how what you see every day is transformed in the world of shadows.

Since today's Label 4 April word was "reflection", I decided to take some artistic license and manufacture my own reflection in two ways- photograph and prose.
Cool shot

Ok, I'm going to hog up too much space on your page, but you reminded me of a poem I wrote in high school

SHADOWS

By Dixie Miller

shadows dance

twisting - entwining - flickering

THAT ONE

IT"S AN ARM

no

a hand

A CLAW

help!

it's grabbing at me

oh please

no

go away

that shadow

it's a heart

pulsing

beating

trying to pull me in

MOMMA

MAAAA MAAAA

THE LIGHT FLASHES ON

the shadows run
scurrying
under my bed
waiting
to get me.

@pandorasecho Thanks Dixie- and thanks for sharing your poem! It fits very well with some of the shadows I've seen this week- but thankfully more were just the lovely and fascinating type. (o:

@bkbinthecity Thanks Brian!
@alia_801 Thanks Alia!

I hadn't really intended to do the Label 4 April word today but when I went to frame the shot, I saw the Mirror Image frame and applied it just to see what it would look like. It really gave the shot a WOW factor!
