All That Remains

I was sitting at the dining room table today and watching the rain fall while I ate lunch. I had just glanced down to put another bite of food on my fork when I notice some swift movement outside and a "poof" of feathers in the air. That means only one thing- the Red Shouldered Hawk has picked off yet another Mourning Dove. )o:
funny how the feathers are 'arranged' this way. interesting. love the juxtaposition of the softness of the feathers and the hardness of the pebbles.

Oh dear! They don't have a chance! That title is the name of a film, I think! It was very good - had Anthony Hopkins in it!

Astonishing story and a very nice capture.

It is even more impressive that it happened right under your nose. Poof! That would freak me out. Hawks have to eat though , don't they?

Wow, all that violence right in your back yard, and you are there to document it all

OH, dear. They have also been known to scoop up small bantam chickens and very small cats, too.

@summerfield Thanks Vikki! I almost don't want to think about what part this was, but I think they might be breast feathers.
@maggiemae Thanks Maggie! I think you may be right- although I am not a movie goer, so I can't confirm it!
@bkbinthecity Thanks Brian!
@mzzhope Thank you Hope- it definitely sums up the whole thing quite well.

I know how you feel. we had a hawk here a few times catching one of our many mourning doves, there isn't anything left then but the feathers. I like this picture though and was wondering if you could enter this one in the May theme Patterns and Texture. theme pat-tex.

@bruni Thanks Bruni! I don't know if it would qualify for May as it was taken in April- but I appreciate the thought!

Very delicate and elegant, there´s sadness in the mood too, love it

Oh, my goodness! How startling and unsettling that must have felt to witness, and to meditate upon what happened to that little bird while he ate his lunch--he became lunch for someone else!!! What good fortune we have to be at the top of the food chain.

Great textures in your shot. How unsettling to see this cycle of life right in front of your eyes. We have a neighborhood pair of hawks and I get to see this enacted sometimes right in my backyard.

@taffy @susale @gratefulness @daisymiller Thank you Taffy, Suse, Sandi and Daisy! Yes, unsettling but all a part of life.

I know it's nature, but I saw a hawk kill a dove while I was walking once, and it gives you a sad feeling. Nice shot.

@eudora Thanks Diane! Yes, it is sad but that's the way it goes.
