Thank you Milanie, Debbie, Diana, Babs, Katrina, Issi, Wylie, Katy, Marilyn, Nina, Wendy, Rob, Cat and Ferry!
Jeff brought home two of these for me. What you can't see is a long piece which comes out the back to attach it to... a roof. They're called snow guards and they are installed to deter ice or snow from melting too quickly and sliding off the roof. I'm going to be cleaning them up a bit, putting some felt on the bottom and using them as book ends in my office.
The roof outside my last work space had a slate roof and iron things in it. I thought they were to keep ice from building up on the roof, as it was pretty steep and the snow would occasionally slide off when the dark roof heated up in the sun.
@randystreat I think they use them more for ice in New England too. But after searching the internet for the name of them I finally found one site that called them snow guards so that's what I'll call them from now on (or until a roofer corrects me!). Thanks Kathy!
