Polished to Shine

Another also-ran for the photo club's scavenger hunt which I'm using as a filler. Taken at lunch one day while in Maine.

My apologies for so many uploads as I catch up with my project. You are never obligated to comment on all my photos when I do this!
Fascinating, subject, and a terrific processing

Thank you Katy, Amy, Harry, Kathy, Diana, and Marilyn! It's not really post-processed. We are not allowed to process the pictures for this competition, so this shot is deliberately over exposed and that's about it.

How do you do this scavenger hunt????

@shutterbug49

We hold this every year with another club that's not too far from us. We alternate who oversees it between the two clubs. The club that is in charge selects topics/themes- up to 8 categories and sets the time frame in which the pictures can be taken.

They also enlist the services of a local photographer/teacher/expert to be a judge who determines the winner of each category and the best set of 8. Points are given for each winner. Sometimes the judge will also add a few of their own titles too- best all around, most creative, and so on, or honorable mentions (but they don't get any points). Points are awarded for them as well.

One person collects all the entries and makes them anonymous so that the judge does not know whose picture is who's. And then converts it back once the winners are determined. We've tried to ask the judges to explain why they chose the photos they did- but they're not that good at explaining themselves or their thought processes!

There are also points awarded for how many members from each club participate, and for how many members complete all the categories. The points are totaled up and the club with the most points wins the hunt. And we do have a trophy that we swap back and forth, but for some the bragging rights are the greater reward.

The winners are announced at our monthly meetings- unfortunately we do not meet on the same night or week of the month so holding a joint meeting has been unsuccessful. But I think it would be fun if we could.

Our club is notoriously slack in participating in this! But it's all for fun in the long run. This year our categories were: Tools of the Trade, ICM, A Different Perspective, Spring Meets Macro, Love in Black and White, Blue Abstract, Car Detail, and An Everyday Item in High-key. We usually run it from end of March to end of May. You could probably do one "in-club" making it more of an individual competition if you don't have another club nearby.

Obviously, the scavenger hunt idea is to go out and find the objects or topic, so no post-processing is allowed such as layering, vignettes, composites, textures, hdr. But converting to monochrome (black and white or sepia) is allowed as well as sharpening, vibrance and contrast adjustments so long as they're not over the top.

I have to say my interest in this friendly competition is not at an all-time high, but two very good friends were organizing it for our club this year and so I did it. In its early days the two clubs actually met in person and did the hunt at one spot over the course of a few hours. But it was hard to review and judge pictures that way so they moved to the digital version rather quickly. But I'd love to do it the old-fashioned way again. There's something about the spontaneity of it that intrigues me!

If you decide to do this for your group you can also tweak it to your needs. Perhaps one person could make the pictures anonymous, post them by category, and the club could vote on the winner after they've all been shown if you don't compete with another club and there's no judge available. Anyway- that's the full story on how we do it!

@olivetreeann clever, to take it, so it doesn’t require any post processing
