Before and After Irene by olivetreeann

Before and After Irene

Irene reached our neck of the woods early Saturday afternoon. The winds reached about 40 mph and the rain fell steadily until Sunday afternoon (7 inches altogether). We lost power Saturday night due to two rather large and old trees that toppled onto power lines. One line was actually severed! We ate a picnic dinner by candlelight and went outside to gaze at the star-studded night sky. It was a little disappointing to wake up on Monday with no power and word was that we wouldn't get it back until Wednesday. But amazingly the power suddenly came back on as we were preparing to find a place to stay tonight. The first thing I did (after sending up a quick prayer of thanksgiving!) was take a hot shower!!! Then after washing up the dirty dishes, I headed for the computer to catch up with 365. What we experienced due to Irene was a small inconvience compared to what those on the coastline are going through. I do love the ocean, but living inland does have its perks. Perhaps the most striking aspect of Irene was seen overhead. The clouds before and after were captivating. From the grey speedsters that brought in the rain and wind to the sunset drenched clouds at the storm's final breath, they hung over our mountain from beginning to end like opening and closing lines of a fairy tale.
Beautiful

Your description was as beautiful as your pictures. You really do appreciate the niceties of everyday life when you go through a storm like Irene. Glad you're back up to speed.

Pretty sky considering what caused it! Glad you're safe and yes it certainly makes you appreciate things when you don't have them (even if only for a little while) ~

@kerristephens Thanks Kerri!
@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen- it really struck me to watch the grey clouds come in so low, then to see the sun on the last clouds at the end and finally the stars last night- sooo many!!
@mrssmith Thanks Carla, me too!
@allie912 Thanks Allison- it looks like you're ok too- I was thinking of you and Pam having to deal with Irene after the earthquake- wow.
@sanera Thanks Samantha- true- I was really trying to be a "good camper", but I must confess, I was a little cranky today before I had my shower!

@digitalrn I have one other sunset picture to post. I have never seen the clouds colored in such a spectacular way before.
@karenann Thank you Karenann. Yes, I mean I must put it in perspective. We were pretty far removed from the very worst of it, but high winds around old trees can still put a glitch in your day! And yes- that was one of my best showers ever! (o:

Great photos to go with the description of your day! Losing power always makes me incredibly thankful for our modern conveniences - like hot showers! Ahhhh... :-)

@roejan Thank you Roe Jan- yes, if it had gone longer, we would have dealt with it but you really do come to see how much you come to expect certain things- like eletricity being a given- when you lose them for a length of time!

@stinkypete The sky after Irene was truly stunning. I'd never seen the colors on the clouds as intense as they were. Thanks Pete!
