After the invention of the alef-bet (this name is based on the first two Semitic letters aleph and beit), additional alphabets evolved, including among others the Arabic and Cyrillic (Russian) ones. Runes (alphabetic characters used by ancient Germanic people groups such as the Teutons from the 3rd to the 13th century) were widely used and sometimes believed to have magic powers. Runic alphabets were commonly referred to as the "futhark" for the sounds of the first six letters. Our 18th letter was the 5th letter of the Runic alphabet and looked very much then as it does today.
@cimes1 I was lucky on this one. I could NOT find an R that met my satisfaction. Everything was hitting in the area, but still too abstract. Then on my way to the car from the pool yesterday I saw this ribbon on the ground and had an AHA! moment. Originally it looked like a P, but with a little prodding, I had my R.
fedex saves the day! those are the strips you pull off to open a fedex envelope. sometimes it's amazing what we see even with the most ordinary things. wonderful find. it's funny that you look down and i'm usually looking up.
@digitalrn Thanks Rick- so glad you're enjoying it! @steeler Thanks Howard- I'm learning as much as you are! @karenann Thanks Karenann- I have this "fear" that if I stop learning, my brain will totally deteriorate- so this has been a good brain exercise for me! @summerfield Thanks Vikki- well I was looking EVERYWHERE for this one! I had taken one shot from the jungle gym, but I would have had to flip it in order to make it look like an R and I really didn't want to do that. The rest of the ones I saw were just not to my liking- too abstract in comparison with the rest of the alphabet. Well now that a couple of hard ones are out of the way we're on to some easier letters for a few days!!
This is a great R. Has this been difficult to do? I actually thought about doing this one day...at the park or some place...and seeing how many letters I could find.
@alia_801 Thanks Alia- almost went with a lower case R, but the ones I'd found weren't up to my usual standards (o: and finally I saw this stuff lying on the ground (looking a little more like a P than an R- but a few nudges with my shoes solved that problem) and realized it would better accomplish my goal. @mrssmith Thanks Carla- for the most part, no it's not that hard. Only a few letters have had me wondering where I would find them- K and R were the two hardest so far.
