S

The term "alphabet" is used by linguists and paleographers (go look it up!) in both a broad and narrow sense. In the broad sense, an alphabet is a script that is segmental; it has separate glyphs for individual sounds and not for larger units such as syllables or words. In the narrow sense, some scholars divide "true" alphabets from two other types of segmental script called abjads and abugidas. A true alphabet, an abjad and an abugidas treat vowels differently. Abjads have letters for consonants and leave most vowels unwritten. Abugidas are also consonant-based, but indicate vowels with specialized markings attached to the consonants. A true alphabet has independent letters for both consonants and vowels. Examples of present-day abjads are the Arabic and Hebrew scripts. Hindi and Thai are considered abugidas, and Latin and Cyrillic are included in the True alphabet classification.

Love that "S." Interesting thing about this is that I almost took a Concentration in linguistics when I majored in English. Instead, I took a Concentration in writing. I really was interested in linguistics and it's origin. Fascinating stuff.

@prttblues lol Bev- your ear lobes would stretch to the floor if you tried to wear this! It's the chain of a little hanging vase in which you can place a cutting from your plant! It's hanging in my bathroom. That's the curtain behind it.

Thank you everyone. I had this one in mind for a while now. It's got a special meaning to me as it was a gift from a very special friend who lost her battle with cancer two years ago now. But love lives on.
