One of the handy dandy abilities of letters is that they can be used to abbreviate things. Of course acronyms come in handy for designating what some things do- such as radar and scuba, which eventually moved from being designated as acronyms to full-fledged words. But perhaps more important to most of us is the use of letters to designate our name, as in initials! The fun thing about my initials is that I went from A. L. H. to A. H. L. If the L looks a little strange to you here, don't worry, you don't need glasses! These letters came from a printer's tray. A and H are pretty straight forward, but when you print an L, your type must be backwards, so that when you print the words, the letters will come out facing forward.
Great photo Ann, invokes memories of the print shop I worked at till it closed and my mentor who taught me how to set type and run the Heidelberg Letterpress.
@httpgeffed Thanks Colleen! @rhubbard Thanks Richard- that sounds like it was an interesting job. Type setting is an art of the past. @digitalrn Thanks Rick! @sarasdadandmom Thanks Terry- and I must say you do as well- we just express them differently! @kimmistephens Thank you Kimmi! @eudora Thank you Diane!
Well, I didn't expect my initials to be so popular- I'm glad you all like them! After deciding to do the alphabet without any other processing but a frame, it was fun to play around with these in Picnik. Boy will I miss that and so far I haven't found anything that I like to replace it!
Creative idea and I love the processing. I, too, will miss Picnik. If you find something similar to replace it, let me know. I've used other sites but none seems to be as comprehensive as Picnik.
ah, the printer letters. of course, being from the old secretarial school, i am familiar with the backward letters. when i first went to secretarial school we were using those heavy manual typewriters, the ribbons would go off their path and we'd have to fix them. or sometimes the letters are to sharp they get stuck in the roller drum. ah, the good old days. and who can still remember the gestetner where you type on a plastic type paper and you press it in the inked drum of the gestetner and it will make hundreds of copies. then you have to collate or assemble the documents afterwards. we've come a long way for better and for worse.
@peterdegraaff Thank you Peter. @cimes1 Thanks Carole. I haven't found anything yet, but I haven't been seriously searching either. My heart isn't in it! @inertie Thank you Inertia. It used to be possible to find them in antique shops quite easily here. I bought these back in the 1980's! @summerfield Thank you Vikki- I remember all those things! Yes, some advances are quite helpful!
"sometimes the letters are to sharp" should be "sometimes the letters are TOO sharp" - i'm anal when it comes to things like this. i know i'm not perfect, but it's not an excuse to make such mistakes :-)
