Having some fun with the Picnik collages before the internet doors of Picnik close on April 19th. I photographed this beautiful tree on April 6th (left side) and added the outer space texture to the right side to give the impression I'd taken it at night. Picmonkey, Picnik's probable replacement, is promising that the collage option is coming. I'll be looking for that one! And for those of you who were bemoaning the loss of the beloved mirror frame, I discovered iPiccy has added that to their frame section last night. Yippee!
This is so eyecatching! I love the starry night one! You should post that one all by itself too! I, too, have some plans for the closure of Piknik...I also had a collage I needed to make so I went on there and did it last weekend...who knows when Pikmonkey will get it , you know? thanks for the tip on mirrored frame!
@espyetta Thanks MaryBeth! I'll save the single post for an uninspired day! I will miss a few things from Picnik still (the thermal and infrared "heat map" effect, the hypnotic effect and a few others that haven't shown up in other online processing sites yet) but I'm finding that I am happy jumping around from Picmonkey to iPiccy to BeFunky and I still have a couple I haven't visited yet. I think Picmonkey will get it up pretty quickly to catch all the loyalty of all those former Picnikkers. @kerristephens Thanks Kerri! I do too.
I like what you have done here. Great comparison and very creative. I too am squeezing the last days from Picnik. I know the other editing programs will be fine, but using Picnik is like slipping into a pair of comfortable old slippers.
Really beautiful collage, Ann. I love the night time one especially...lovely sky. How does one get started on picmonkey? Through the interenet? Would you go on "free picmonkey.com?" Now you know how computer illiterate, I am. lol
@bruni Thank you Bruni! The second shot is one of those textures I saved from Picnik (In the "Final Shuttle Launch" effects). I had to walk myself through the process to explain it to you and I created the starry night shot while I was taking note of the steps! So it's not really a night shot- it's the day shot with the star texture applied. Cool huh? It really does look like I was there under the stars!
@allie912 Thanks Allison! Picmonkey is really so similar to Picnik. The layout is slightly different, but most of the favorites are there. At present it's free, but I think it will end up like Picnik with a freebie mode and a premium mode with more effects etc. They don't have a mirror yet, but I did discover that iPiccy has one now along with a few more choices- so if I'm really desperate for a mirror frame, it's out there! I'd suggest you start with Picmonkey- it's put together by a couple folks who used to work on Picnik.
@anazad511 Thank you Ana! This is actually the same shot in each frame, only the second frame has a star texture applied to it giving it the appearance of a night shot. The key to using textures is to have the original shot very minimalistic or in the case of this shot, a strong positive/negative space. That way the texture stands out and doesn't conflict with the shot.
@espyetta They've already started to add some new things which I really like. They've put on an effect called daugertype which is basically an old black and white type photo. And they have some interesting frames too- a few that weren't on Picnik and some that were. No mirror frame yet, but iPiccy has that covered now!
@sarasdadandmom Thank you Sara's mom!!! Thank you Terry! @deniseinindy Thank you Denise!
Well now you two just made my night!!
These are awesome! I would love to see the one on the right all alone. I think the one on the left is great too but those stars really add something to the shot! Nicely done. FAv
@karenann Thanks Karenann! Yes- Picmonkey.com will get you there. At present it's all free, but I have a feeling at some point it will be like Picnik where there will be a basic menu which is free and a premium menu which will have a yearly fee. Picnik was so affordable, so my guess is that Picmonkey probably will be too. The nice thing is that even though it's laid out a little differently, Picmonkey is just as easy to use as Picnik and it has most of the Picnik favorites plus a few new things too. As for the starry shot- that is a texture I saved from Picnik into my computer and then applied in Picmonkey. They have an option where you can upload your own texture. If you're interested in how that's done- go to my "Arrow" shot and scroll through the comments. There is a rather lengthy reply to Bruni where I explain how I did it for the arrow texture. It's not hard to do, just a lot of steps.
@sgoodin1 Thank you so much Sara! I will post the starry one on one of my "uninspired" days since you are the third person to request it! It is actually the day shot with a texture applied (the stars are from Picnik). Thank you for the fav!
Thank you SO much, Ann. You have been the biggest help to me with this change in picnik coming. I have a feeling that I shouldn't wait till the last minute ... but am procrastinating. Appreciate all the kind help that you've given me. Thank you again!
@httpgeffed Thank you Colleen! @karenann I started using these sites early because I was so afraid Picnik would end and I'd have nowhere to process my shots! I don't like the processing programs that are in my computer and to go back to them now would be so hard. Checking all these sites out was really a matter of self preservation! So don't feel bad!
@karenann@olivetreeann I agree with Karen, Ann...these are really good tips how to get the most out of piknik while we can and then transition to pikmonkey. I will try that texture saving and using in pikmonkey thing!
it looks magical, the right photo, to me the sparkle don't just look like stars, they also look like fireflies to me. when i was growing up, i used to catch fireflies whenever we're allowed to play at night in the moonlight. i'd gather them in a jar but they would all die the next morning. this conjures pleasant memories from long ago. awesome!
also, ipiccy now has all those collage picnik used to have, both basic and premium, and they have triangle collages, too. just in case you haven't noticed. :-)
@mrssmith Thanks Carla! It came about because one of my followers asked how you save a texture from Picnik and apply it on PicMonkey! @filsie65 Thanks Phil! I like how it turned out. It was the right combination of picture and texture.
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri! I do too.
