Well, it's not going to appear in Life Magazine and it probably won't even appear in the final 5 for this challenge BUT I think I finally took one that captures the spirit of Dupain's slice of life in black and white. I'm pleased with this. I like the way the picture draws you in from the left and zig zags your eyes through the workers and down to the bucket loader's bucket. I like the contrast of the black sweatshirt and T of the outside workers and the light T on the middle guy. I have no idea what they were digging or why they needed a bucket loader for it, but it was nice to see our maintenance crew sprucing up the place. This was a very spontaneous shot. And I think that's what is most like Dupain's style. He seemed to just grab his camera and shoot things as they happened, rather than setting up the shot, and that is exactly what happened here. I'm glad this challenge introduced me to the photography of Max Dupain and his distinctive style.
@mrssmith Thanks Carla- well, to be honest with you they had no idea I took their picture. I shot this through the window of the indoor pool. They were outside, I was in and I used the zoom on my camera to get a closer shot! They were so preoccupied with whatever they were digging up that they didn't even notice me. But they could have seen me if they looked my way.
@summerfield Thank you Vikki! Yes, a semi-sneak shot. If they'd looked up they would have seen me fiddling with the zoom. @sangwann Thanks Dione! Absolutely. This shot just happened to catch the guys at the right time. @allie912 Thanks Allison- that's the Dupain of it- I pressed the shutter at just the right moment.
@karenann thank you Karenann!
@vposey thanks Vickie!
@digitalrn thanks Rick!
@woot thanks Davide!
@httpgeffed thanks Colleen!
@rhubbard thanks Rich- I can see the headline now: Maintenance Crews Baffled By Never-ending Hole!
