Even though we didn't have power, we still had to eat! So I found myself being rather creative with cooking methods and what to cook! I managed to do a casserole on top of our wood stove that was actually quite tasty! And we had coolers full of ice to take care of what needed to be cold. A friend who had a generator stored all my frozen goods that didn't thaw completely. But we did end up throwing a lot out. I decided to take my friend Debbie's offer of a hot shower on Day 4 (up till then we'd been washing out of a bucket!) and ventured out of the community for the first time since the storm hit. This was the sight that greeted me! You can see where other trees have already been cleared to the left and right. I guess this one was secure enough to come back to later.
Please do not feel obligated to respond to this massive upload. I will once again be off the site for a few days and I'm trying to get caught up so I can fall behind once more!
Great capture. Must have been quite an experience. In SA we often cook stews or casseroles on wood, we call them potjies (pronounced poy-keys). Usually use a heavy cast iron pot. They always go down a treat!
Really neat capture though I wouldn't want to take the chance of driving under that branch. Amazing how creative we can become in cooking with just the basics.
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri! @salza Thanks Sally- interesting info. Potjies sound yummy! Our wood stove is constructed of soap stone so I can't use any metal pots on it for fear of scratching it. But I have a number of pots made of glass, so I use them. @httpgeffed Thanks Colleen! @prttblues Thanks Bev! Yes, we survived and are doing fine. @alia_801 Thanks Alia! @cimes1 Thanks Carole! It's still there and one lane has been blocked off. We'll see if it's gone when we come home from our family vacation.
that tree is looking precarious. i, too, would not want to be driving underneath it. murphy's law would have it falling down on me. yes, murphy and i don't see eye to eye. ahhh...hot shower, one of life's necessities! i feel for you, ann. but i suppose you and jeff are safe as well as your other families and friends and that's all we ever prayed for.
