Four Generations of Smiles by olivetreeann

Four Generations of Smiles

After a month of scanning and organizing my family photos and then choosing one each day to write up a memoir I've come to the conclusion that taking pictures is in my blood. Today I discovered a note with some of the pictures I was scanning from my Aunt Peg in which she confessed "I have always enjoyed taking pictures...". One thing that I always find striking is the way genes work. Although each person has their own distinct look, there are moments or pictures which capture our similarities. Although we are unique, we do share certain features in common with our parents, our grandparents and so on! When my son Christopher was little Aunt Peg insisted he was a carbon copy of my father at that age. And now we see that same thing in his son Micah. So for my final Self Story entry I thought I'd do a collage featuring one of our family's best features- our smile! What do you think?

For those of you who know me I'm sure you can figure out who's who! But just in case:
Upper left: my father at 2 years old
Center: my grandson Isaac at 1 year 1 month
Lower right: me! (probably 2 or 3??)
Lower left: Christopher in 1983 (2 years old)
Definitely the same shape of mouth - which means the smile is the same! How wonderful to notice and document this!

What a great collage, Ann. I think it's a perfect ending to your month of self stories. Congratulations on completing it! It was really great reading your past memories and family history. Thanks so much for sharing so much of yourself with me (us).

@prttblues Thanks Bev! There were some days when I just didn't want to write another story about someone who was no longer here (as with Mom and Dad) or was separated by distance (as in my cousins and hence the reason I didn't include a lot of shots of my boys growing up).

every last one of you is completely adorable.

Oh my--it's the same smile and the same eyes, just different times. Wonderful collage. Fav.

I agree about photography being in the genes--or maybe the desire to preserve our memories. I've learned a lot about one of my aunts by scanning and studying her photos. There was an artist underneath that stern, businesslike demeanor....

@olivetreeann I don't blame you, Ann. It's hard. I didn't do that challenge because I basically don't have a family anymore. I am a self declared orphan.

@summerfield Thank you Vikki! I have to post a shot of my father and one of Christopher as young men. If you think the similarities of my Dad and Micah are uncanny, wait till you see this...
@prttblues There are some challenges that are not for everyone but you would probably have fun with the word challenges they do each month.

So cute!. Your father and your grandson Isaac have the most similarities.

@vesna0210 Thank you Vesna! Yes, it is surprising to see how close their smiles are. My son Christopher also looked identical to my father in his early 20's at that age. I think I will put a collage together some day for that too.
