Oil and Water by olivetreeann

Oil and Water

Well, I have learned a very valuable lesson today. Table top photography and I do NOT mix just like oil and water do not mix! This is an ultra, ultra cropped portion of a complete failure! Trouble is, I'm supposed to set up the same thing tomorrow night at photo club. Hopefully I'll get the bugs worked out tomorrow afternoon before I have to leave. And after that, I shall admire other people's oil and water shots and never attempt to do my own again!
Oh, but it looks fabulous!

Your commentary made me laugh, though I know it wasn't supposed to -- this stuff is so hard to do! I've done one in 2 and a half years and it needed a ton of cropping.

i know i have only one post of oil and water in my three albums. just one and like you say it was a complete fail. believe me, today i was just looking at my more recent attempts but they just don't meet my posting criteria of "should be good enough". i such at light painting and oil and water photography. anything that looks easy, they're actually hard to do. and i've watched several tutorials and i still couldn't get it.

You are a step ahead of me, I haven't even tried this yet. I think it looks great.

this is interesting

Good for you for even trying! I'd have to read the manual first! I don't think its a failure as there are lots of great shapes, designs and colours to enjoy!

This is wicked cool, Ann! It has an almost 3-D look to it. Look at the circles with the dots. They look like they are popping out of the photo. It's great you tried it and I think it came out cool. But that's my opinion. You didn't fail. You did great.

I think its a good abstract, i like the little reflected dots in the drops. Hope you feel better about it tonight. I tried a few last year and they were OK, maybe time to try again! One thing I discovered through playing is to have a bigger distance between the water/oil mixture and your background and lots of direct light. I used a deep but fairly narrow bowl with the coloured background underneath and filled the bowl to the top.

I wouldn't call this a failure at all. I like it!

lovely colors ann

Fascinating

Nice job on this one

Mmmm, I've been thinking about attempting this... Thank you for pointing out it's harder than it looks! I still like this one though.

You have captured a great shot. I always use a dropper when doing shots like this, that way I can control the size of the droplets. Good luck with the set up tomorrow night.

Cool shot

@thresheg Thanks for the fav Graham!

@homeschoolmom Thank you Lisa!
@taffy Thank you Taffy! It is absolutely alright to laugh- I was too!
@summerfield Thanks Vikki! I know what you mean. The video I watched really did make it look easy, but there were a few tips (that folks posted here) which weren't in the video. And I think that was the difference as to why it worked "on film" but not on my table. That being said, I'm glad I posted the failure- as I got a lot of good feedback and now I think I'll get one right.
@karlow75 Thanks Kane! Pay attention to some of the advice here and watch to see if I post a success in the future!
@fullcircle Thanks Cindy!
@maggiemae Thanks Maggie! If you saw what it is supposed to look like, you'd know it's not right, but it does have some bright spots. I'm going to take some of the tips given here and try again. Stay tuned!
@prttblues Thanks Bev! I'm glad you like it. If it wasn't for that one blob in the middle, I'd probably like it too. But that thing really bothers me! Although it didn't turn out right, I'm glad I posted it because now I have some tips to work with, so, I think I'll try it again.
@dibzgreasley Thanks Debs! Your info helped. I think a few things you mentioned are needed in my set up. My first attempt was actually better and I had the water and oil further from the background in that one. So, I'll try it again!
@aikimomm Thanks Phoebe! Well, it doesn't look anything like what it's supposed to, but now I have some tips to work with so I'll have to have another go at it.
@zabcoloma Thanks Zab!
@neatz Thank you Anita!
@sarasdadandmom Thanks Terry!
@whimsicalgrateful Thanks Marta! It's good to try things even if they don't work! Actually I'm glad I posted what I think of as a failure because now I have some good advice on how to improve it, and it might come out the way it's supposed to next time.
@nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole! And thanks for that tip. I'll see if I have one in my "junk" drawer. I did in the past. That will definitely be helpful!
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri!

this is very cool! love the reflected pattern in the droplets!! I hate it when something doesn't go the way you want!
February 17th, 2015
Wow, You're brave to even try this I'm so hopeless at this sort of thing that I usually end up binning it and going out to find a decent view or a passing sheep!! There are some very pretty refections in the bubbles of oil.
February 17th, 2015
Well, it did turn out to be a really cool abstract. If you wouldn't have said anything I wouldn't know any different. ;-) I like it.
February 17th, 2015
@nicoleterheide Thanks Nicole! I've learned some good tips here though, so I'll give it another go.
@thistle Thanks Joyce! I certainly understand that feeling! I thought this looked simple enough. But there are some tricks to it. I'll try again and see what happens!

@cimes1 Thank you Carole!

Oil and water can be rather finnicky. I hope your demo goes off well.
February 17th, 2015
A beautiful abstract. Great patrons and capture
February 17th, 2015
@salza Thanks Sally! Good thing all I have to do is set it up, but I do want people to be able to get some shots with it.
@pyrrhula Thank you Pyrrhula!
February 17th, 2015
Beautiful abstract shot. I did not like my first oil and water shots either.
February 17th, 2015
Your commentary made me laugh out loud - how many times have I had a great idea for a shot and then fail? Too many to count!! I do not think this is a failure at all - I quite like the way it turned out! Very cool!
February 18th, 2015
@olivetreeann Good point. :)
February 18th, 2015
@daisymiller Thank you Daisy! I did try some more, still not completely satisfied, but it was a good exercise in experimentation!
@tabarlett Thank you Tammy! I always think with my mishaps and missteps in photography as a good way to laugh at myself. Not taking them so seriously actually helps to give me the gumption to try again.

I like these little blue-white balls.

@vesna0210 Thank you Vesna! They are actually the reflection of the paper below.
