The Doorway to the Church of the Nativity

I was working on the final proof for an Advent devotional when I got a call from my niece saying she'd like to come visit for the night. Whoa! That meant a lot of cleaning and rearranging of my schedule! But it's worth it. So, instead of taking time for photos today, I'll post one I added to my book.

This shot was taken on my third trip to Israel and unfortunately it was horribly over-exposed! But as usual, I was able to make it into a passable shot with some artistic effects.

You can see in the wall here that the original door was rather large- large enough for a man seated on a horse to pass through. Unfortunately that was not always a good thing! Friend or foe could easily go through so oftentimes the church was ransacked or damaged when a foe entered. Once it was even set on fire. At some point in time the door was filled in, and then filled in even more so that at present you can't even walk into the church upright, you must stoop down to pass through.
This is lovely. I would love to go to Israel.

I like the artistic effect! I've been through that door, and yes, you have to stoop.

Love the artistic effect, Ann. It really highlights the texture of the stones, and stooping seems to me an appropriate way to enter this sacred space.

I hate last minute cleaning and organising like that but I do enjoy the visits and I am sure you did as well.
