A Comparision

You may have been wondering what the difference is between a shot that is a "natural black and white" as opposed to a shot which is converted to black and white. The top shot is "natural". The soccer ball key chain and the beaded necklace it's sitting in are both black and white without having to convert them. The bottom shot demonstrates what happens when you covert the color shot to black and white.
There is more definition in the converted shot and you can always decrease the contrast to give a lighter look!

A great comparison Ann and I am surprised at the difference.

Good comparison ...Thanks for the explanation. I would never have guessed that the converted shot would have so much more definition.

Interesting to see the comparison between the two.

An interesting study!! Did you do any other editing besides just converting it?

How interesting that the shots and processing should be so different. What a useful study. Thanks for sharing

Interesting to see the comparison between the colour and the b&w. I like both, but especially like the detail in the converted image.

Interesing, difficult to prefer one.

Interesting to see the difference. I guess it's good to know these things about our cameras.

Thank you Maggie, Nicole, Dinah, Sally, Chris, Babs, Katy, Daisy, Sue, Kas, Ferry, and Kathy!

@grammyn Not really- when I sharpened it I used a pre-set that also brightened the contrast but only around the edges. I debated on putting just a sharpened image in, but decided to use the one posted in the main album for today so that if people wanted to look at it a little larger they could. The brightening did not make a huge difference. But as you can see just a simple black and white effect does!

@olivetreeann but you did sharpen it which makes the detail and contrast more visible or did you sharpen it AFTER you made it into a collage?

@grammyn Before.

@olivetreeann Thanks for all the clrification Ann. Maybe I learned something! ;~}
