Artist: Henry Ho 'olulu Pitman (1845-1863; do the math!). Henry was one of many native Hawaiians who fought in the Civil War while Hawaii was still an independent kingdom. His father was a merchant from Massachusetts and his mother came from Hawaiian nobility. His father returned to the mainland after his mother's death and Henry joined him in order to get an education. He didn't last in school long and ran away to enlist in the army without his family knowing it. Unlike other Hawaiian recruits Henry was assigned to a "white" regiment. He fought in the historic battles of Antitem and the Maryland Campaign but was captured by Confederate forces in the March to Fredericksburg when he was separated from his unit. He contracted lung disease while in Libby Prison and died only a few months after his release as part of a prisoner exchange. (Having just visited Antitem recently, this biography really caught my attention!)
Quote: (from wow4u.com because the wikiquote was ridiculously long!) "Your life is rich with possibility, and you are the one who can discover the opportunities that will allow you to live your dreams." Jason Harvey from "Achieve Anything in Just One Year"
Interesting "artist"
Typical quote
Ho-hum on the combo- but I at least I got something done!
Thank you Henri, Lynda, Sandy, Ferry, Kathy and Wendy! It was a quick entry. I may have to revisit the picture though as it's one of peeling paint and rust shots I love so much and somehow it fell through the cracks!
