The View Through the Stone Arch

From a visit to Bethlehem Steel in May of 2014. I know so much more about processing now which really helps to enhance some of these older shots.
Great view and capture.

Nice and grainy. Very dilapidated looking. Sad to see these big plants close down and slowly die.

I really like this -- the way you've processed to bring out the textures and the rich tones.

Thank you Ferry, Katy, Marilyn, Kathy, Harry, Lou Ann, Taffy, Gloria, Babs, Katrina and Wendy!

I truly appreciate all your views, comments and favs! I'm glad some of you noticed the texturing. I really wanted to bring out the gritty feeling of the steel mill that used to be here.

@randystreat This mill closed down somewhere around the late 70's, early 80's. It totally devastated the area economy. Billy Joel that had a song with a line in it, "Well I'm livin' here in Allentown..." which was all about the closing of the steel mills in Bethlehem and Allentown. Both cities were basically in a slump for decades. However, about 5 years ago one casino bought one of the mills and turned it into a resort and gambling hotel. I think it's thriving now. This plant though has been turned into a historical site. There is now a walkway you can take through the mill, a museum with all the stuff on display and a park where they have concerts and other events. There is still a lot of economic depression but there is also some significant growth which bodes well for a revival of sorts in the area.

Billy Joel. I remember it well because I used to go to Girl Scout camp outside of Quakertown was near Allentown, that and the fact that my maiden name is Allan (spelled alternately of course). I grew up a bit closer to Philadelphia and there were plants between my town and Philly that closed during this period of time, too. I'm glad that at least two were repurposed.

@randystreat I asked Jeff which one it was during dinner and he told me as you knew that it was Billy Joel. I really had no connection to it until the first time I visited this building which is part of the museum area.
