This is a memorial to Jackie and Matthew (Mack) Robinson, two notably athletic brothers who grew up in Pasadena.
Jackie was the first black to play major league baseball in the modern era and Mack won a silver medal behind Jesse Owens' gold for the 200m dash in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
There are messages and images engraved on the sides and backs of each head that are representative of each brother. For example, Jackie loved doing crossword puzzles, so there is a large crossword puzzle on the back of his head. These details are easy to miss if you pass by too quickly.
The bronze heads are 9 feet high and stand across the street from city hall. They really are amazing pieces.
