Day off from work, spent running around town doing errands. Along the way, I kept looking for something to shoot. Nothing was jumping out at me and I was beginning to feel a bit desperate since I was quickly losing daylight.
At one point, I turned down a quiet side street in an effort to avoid heavy rush hour traffic and OMG! Peacocks EVERYWHERE! Hell, I must be in Arcadia. LOL
Arcadia is known for their free-running peacocks. In fact, I think their city emblem has a peacock on it.
They were walking in the street, in the center grassy median, on the sidewalk, perched on low walls and several were in the front yards of the houses on the street. One yard had a yellow lab in it, but the peacocks didn't seem too phased.
When I tried to slowly approach them, they moved away, but I found that if I stayed still, they would act like I wasn't there.
Shot this guy from about 4 feet away. I named him Lucky, because he sure brought me some.
Yeah, I'm going back there. :-)
Edit:
Ok, this is too funny. I Googled Arcadia peacocks and found an article that explains that the peacocks were originally imported to Arcadia by the founder.... Elias 'LUCKY' Baldwin, at the turn of the century.
I learned about Lucky Baldwin years ago, but honestly wasn't thinking of him when I named the peacock.
Wow, what a great find and an awesome shot. I look forward to more peacock shots. Hopefully you get one with its feathers open. I think you are supposed to whistle or something to get them to open their feathers. May want to google that one as my sister mentioned it and I forgot what she said. FAV
That's too funny! I grew up in Baldwin Park, which was named after Lucky Baldwin. I have friends in Arcadia/TempleCity and visit there once in a while but I had no idea about the free roaming peacocks!
I remember the peacocks, since they are not native they can get over-populated easily in Arcadia. But they are always so much fun to see. The LA Arboritum has quite a few, a fun place to visit. We spent a half day there last year and didn't come close to seeing it all. Some day I'll get back there. Another wonderful place to go for pictures is the Huntington Library. Sigh, too many fascinating places, not enough time.

Very few of them had tail feathers and those that did, were pretty scraggly. Must not be mating season.
