The Good Egg by pasadenarose

The Good Egg

I have been wanting to buy REAL and local eggs for quite some time, but never knew of a source. For the past couple of years I've been doing the next best thing and veered toward the cage-free organic eggs in the grocery store, but I'm not sure what the hens' living conditions really are.

Well, today I made a quick stop at a little store in a Los Angeles neighborhood that specializes in local organic produce and other mostly healthy goods. Charming little place. It's what I imagine a small local grocery store would have looked like decades ago, complete with the long wooden display counter at the checkout.
I paid an arm and a leg for a dozen eggs from some happy hens (or so the package proclaims) :-).
I kid you not when I say the VERY FIRST egg that I cracked open was a double yolk. I've NEVER seen one of those (and I'm no Spring chicken myself), because they are weeded out at the processing plant when you buy from large retailers.

I wasn't sure what to expect, flavor-wise, as I've always heard how much better they taste. It was a slight difference in taste, but what surprised me was that they produced a more tender scrambled egg, despite my best efforts to ruin it by over cooking when I stepped away from the stove for a minute. LOL
I'll be sure not to do that again. ;-)

Anyway, feeling rather uninspired and lazy regarding photos lately, but I will rummage around in my camera's memory card and try to pull out the best of each day...whatever that might be. Bleh.

Thanks SO much for all the lovely comments and Fav's on my recent Bright Days Ahead post. At 15 Fav's, it's my highest rated shot to date. Yay, that made me smile. :-)
wonderful pov and egg-celent cropping

Love the way you have cropped this. We have our own hens and the eggs do taste different (plus you know that the hens are happy). Saying that we have different coloured eggs every day and I have never been able to photograph them effectively. You have done a great job presenting yours. Love it

Loely close up of happy eggs from happy hens. Well presented and accompanied by a lovely background story.

Cool crop and interesting perspective.

funny that the box and the egg bear a resemblance to a hen ( I see a head with a beak )

Terrific shot of this interesting subject! Nice detail and I see the chicken head in the carton too!

Fantastic shot of these eggs. I am the same and search high and low for produce that meets my stringent requirements. No cage eggs for me, only organic free range, non antibiotic hormone free for me. It is getting more difficult to source products that are GMO free and that aren't from some multi-national company only interested in the money making machine of the establishment. I'm anti it all haha so I completely understand!!

@cazann
I took a peek at your album and really like what you have there. I'll be a new follower. :-)
It was funny to see a similar shot from you in Jan, I believe it was. I guess there are no new ideas, eh? LOL

I know, I thought about my egg photo when I saw this one....lol

Fabulous perspective of these eggs! Great focus and wonderful story! How much did they cost you? My friend who sells them here likes that information.

@kathyladley *cough* five *cough cough* seventy five *cough*! OUCH.
It's a painful price, but I can't stand to think of the living conditions of the poor chickens in the standard egg ranches. I can only hope that these chickies have a somewhat better existance.

Haha, the thumbnail looked like a bare bottom to me when I first saw it! Seriously, it's a great shot of these delicious-looking eggs. We've always had our own fresh-laid eggs; certainly nothing to beat them.

What a very lovely shot and POV :) Good for you for going free-range and organic eggs :) The chickens are treated so poorly at regular egg farms.... it is sad to see. And keep smiling sunshine :) I do hope you feel more motivated as Spring and Summer come our way! I missed ya while you were gone! :) Have a super Thursday! :
