Sycamore or sweet gum tree. how pretty they are . We have sweet gums but they don't get red like this! I could be wrong I may have to check. Here is what ours look like http://365project.org/grammyn/everything-else/2012-04-27

Yes, I think we are on the right track here. @webfoot said they are Liquid Amber (Liquidambar) and Wikipedia says that is another name for Gum or Sweet Gum.
