I recently heard that there is a plan to install Anti-Suicide signs on my beloved Colorado St bridge. I don't know how many, or how large they will be, but I decided to scurry on over to get some shots sans signs.
This bridge underwent a major overhaul in 1993, including the installation of anti-suicide railing the whole length. I've gotta say, if I wanted to jump off this bridge, it wouldn't be too difficult. The railing isn't much of a deterrent in my opinion and the stats seem to back me up.
Over 150 fifty people have jumped to their death here since 1919, 13 of those since 2006.
Dr. Paula Clayton, medical director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, gave her opinion on the effectiveness of such signs:
“It’s a nice first step…but the Golden Gate Bridge does have signs, and yet it hasn’t changed the rate of people dying by jumping from that bridge, so it’s doubtful,”
It is a short walk from the parking area, out onto the bridge. As I was walking along, I noticed what looked like a dollar bill on the sidewalk. When I bent down to pick it up, I realized it was a FIVER. I did a quick pirouette to check for possible owners, even though I was sure I was alone. Not a soul in sight, and I'm $5 richer. :-)
I really like the POV, light and shadows. B&W is a perfect choice for the shot!
LOL
I thought of you when I paid for lunch today. ;-)
