Alcock & Brown

Alcock and Brown made the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June 1919. They flew in a Vickers Vimy, and carried a small amount of mail, marking another 'first'.

The Vickers factory was located a few miles from where I live. It was demolished many years back and a retail park now occupies some of that land. This year, to mark the 100th anniversary of the landmark flight, two life-sized statues were placed at the entrance, depicting the two airmen in their flying costumes, and commemorating their significant achievement.

A wonderful couple of statues and how good that they commemorate this spot, despite the factory itself disappearing.
