This old Town Hall building dates back to the mid-16th century, conceivably during the reign of Henry VIII. At this time, Aldeburgh was an important coastal market town and its elders clearly felt it needed a building of some substance to reflect this. The lower floor was used for up to 6 shops, whilst the upper floor (which is accessed via an external staircase on the other side of the building) was used for civic purposes. The building was renovated to its present condition in the 19th century. The term "moot" derives from an old Saxon word for "meeting".
