Coopers Bridge Flood Lock by peadar

Coopers Bridge Flood Lock

This is on the Calder & Hebble Navigation, near Dewsbury, Yorkshire. The Calder & Hebble is called a "navigation", as it is a mix of canals and rivers. Here you see a "flood lock" because beyond is a tidal river section, and the lock gate provides flood protection for this protected section of built canal.
Beautiful reflections. I bet travelling along the canals is a wonderful way to see the area.

Another winner.

And the old building on the left is interesting - it's door leading straight out to the water suggests a history closely tied to the canal. :)

@robz Yes Rob, you're right, this was clearly a wharf building.

@peadar There is so much fascinating history associated with these waterways - I can see why you enjoy them so much. :)

@robz Did you know that the word 'wharf' is derived from 'warehouse at the river front'?

I had a farewell party yesterday; my friend is leaving because her husband changed his workschedule and will be rotating from now on. They bought a narrowboat and will travel on the canals on his month off and she will stay put when heโ€™s out in the field for a month. So exciting !! Saw pictures of the interior and they are converting some smaller spaces into lager ones ; this could really work great ! I must admit, I was a bit jealous ๐Ÿ˜‰

@momamo Lucky them. That sounds perfect, the best of both worlds!

@peadar No! - see - so much interesting stuff! That whole area of word derivation is also fascinating. Thanks for the info :)

Great shot and reflections. Does this flood control lock protect this area from flooding? Or is it a floodplain and open the airlock to throw away excess water?
October 16th, 2019
@haskar The flood gate protects the (man made) section of canal where it joins a tidal river. Beyond the gate the river is presently at a higher level due to the persistent rain over the past month. I hope that helps?

@peadar Thank you now I know. We often use weirs opened during high water to prevent flooding of the city below. Then the water is poured onto the so-called floodplains.
