Catalina Island is one of eight islands in the Channel Islands archipelago. It lies about 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles. They say it's 15 minutes by helicopter, or one hour by express boat but we did the crossing by sail, slow and easy, in about 5 1/2 hours. The deepest water between the island and the mainland is 3,000 feet.
