This is the worse (and the older) of the two cracks that required attention. These are my third and fourth uses of epoxy and fiberglass matting. Here we see fiberglass in its more "lethal" state.
Fiberglass matting or cloth is as soft and silky as corn silk. That is, until you soak it with epoxy and the epoxy cures. Now those formerly soft fibers are like little needles! (The "excess" in this image will be trimmed off with a utility knife.)
I do not know what caused this crack; the boat was like this when I bought it earlier this summer. But it's a 30+ year old boat, it's going to have its issues. On the plus side, I have learned much and I am now very well acquainted with my vessel!
