Something older than me!
A “china plate that was Clare’s grandmother’s. The printing on the bottom: “A Rundel // New Wharf Pottery // England”. Obviously, a Google search followed.
From
A-Z of Stoke-on-Trent Potters, the business was an “
Earthenware manufacturer at Navigation Road, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England.” Its brief history:
» “The name New Wharf was derived from the Wharf that was built on the nearby Burslem Branch of the Trent & Mersey canal at that time.
» “In 1877 Thomas Francis Wood, along with his brother William, purchased for £5075 a site in Navigation Road, which they called New Wharf Pottery, and which they had probably been tenants or since 1875.
» “The partners were Absalom Wood, two of his sons Thomas Francis and William together wilth [sic] Ebenezer Swann.
» “In December 1882 Ebenezer Swann left the business.
» “In 1894 the works were absorbed into the larger Wood & Son company.”
Soooo, in order for
this plate to be labelled as “New Wharf Pottery,” it must have been produced no later than 1894. Definitely older than me.
I wish I could paste an inset with the printing from the bottom of the plate, but I don’t think ON1 supports that.
Wrong! Mags pointed out that a layer can be added from another file.
» See
tomorrow’s post.
Quote in the title is from a Pam Tillis song, “
Homeward Looking Angel.”
